MEMORY 1 - Mom's homemade costume
Notes
- NAME CURRENTLY BLURRED OUT
- Mori knows he is attending a hero school and how their costume procedure works
- Super powers are 'quirks', and he didn't have one before, but now he does? Somehow?? Despite everyone else getting them in elementary school?
- He has no idea who the person on the phone he called is
- He knows his mum gave up on him once from what she said, but doesn't remember the flashback panel shown and that isn't present in the memory
- His mum made him a costume that imitates someone he idolises BUT WHO? It's definitely not anything cool and doesn't offer the support and protection a costume from the support companies would BUT WHO CARES HIS MUM MADE IT FOR HIM AND HE LOVES IT.
Memory 2 - Police cover up
Notes:
- He was hospitalised after a fight alongside two of his friends, Iida and Todoroki. Midoriya's name will be blurred out.
- One of his friends has car engines in his legs and that's completely normal.
- This is before he got some of the more major scarring.
- They fought someone called 'The Hero Killer' who definitely let them live. It sounds like he was trying to kill Iida? They burned him and broke a lot of his bones.
- Gran Torino is his mentor.
- The chief of police is a dog man and this is completely normal. The barking is a little odd though.
- He goes to a school called U.A.
- The police don't use quirks, but heroes do, with permission.
- They definitely did not have permission.
- Iida saved someone called Native, Mori saved Iida, Todoroki saved Mori. Rescue loop!
- Todoroki is a mouthy kid who is definitely going to get them arrested.
- But then the police chief is on their side and covers it all up for them, credit will go to someone named Endeavor? Who is Todoroki's mentor?
- Mori is SUPER RELIEVED at the end of this memory, and doesn't care too much about the praise, he has no idea of the storm coming.
Memory 3 - Winning the race
Notes
- All mentions of his name erased as usual
- All Might (?) has taken an interest in him, and this has made Todoroki declare him a rival. He says he’s not here to make friends, but weren’t they friends??
- All Might told him to tell the world he has arrived. Their sports festival is being broadcast worldwide?? Or at least to the country, no wonder he felt so nervous!
- He’s in class 1A, they get a flashier announcement than the rest of the classes. They survived a villain attack? Mori will wonder if this relates to the hero killer.
- Bakugou is their class representative and their entire class goes OH NO as he gets up and declares war on the rest of the school making them a target THANKS BAKUGOU.
- Mori apparently knows Bakugou well enough to read his moods, and if that shoulder bump is any indication they don’t get on.
- ROBOTS. It is not the first time he has faced these robots and he is not as scared of them as he was, but Jesus his classmates are ruthless with them.
- Also Kirishima’s hardening quirk is so cool! But he thinks it’s generic?
- Speaking it quirks people are definitely going to freak out about everyone’s appearance again. Bird shaped heads and shadows are normal guys!
- A name for his quirk! It’s called ‘One for All’ but he can’t use it?? So he has to get creative.
- Blowing yourself up twice is a perfectly reasonable way to win a school race.
- Landing strategies are. Hard. Oh well!
- He wins!!!! And finds All Might in the crowd, that gaunt blonde man is All Might? But there’s so much pride he’s so emotional he kept his promise!!!
- Mori’s friends come over to congratulate him but he’s flustered and can’t accept the praise, he only got lucky his plans kept working out and there’s still more events to come.
Memory 4 - A chat with Shigaraki
Notes
- Once again all mentions of Izuku's name or 'Deku' are censored.
- Some of his classmates are upset about failing an exam and not being able to come on the school trip, but Mori is trying to reassure them that it could be a trick.
- It is and apparently their teacher lies like this a lot. A LOGICAL RUSE.
- Most of the class makes plans to go shopping together to prepare for the boot camp, except for Kacchan who refuses and Todoroki who is visiting someone in hospital.
- The Kiyashi ward shopping mall is huge and stocks apparel for any kind of quirk, telling Mori's friend with six arms and friend with engines in his legs that they can definitely provide for them come shop with us.
- The shopping mall is full of odd looking people with inhuman quirks and this is normal and fine.
- People recognise them from the sports festival, whoa fame is weird!!!
- His friend Uraraka freaks out and runs away from him for some reason??? Everyone splits up and he's all alone, U-Uraraka why.......
- AND THEN HE IS CORNERED BY A VILLAIN NAMED SHIGARAKI TOMURA AND IT'S BAD. THIS IS BAD. Mori struggles to keep his cool and be a good hostage so Shigaraki will not murder a bunch of people.
- Shigaraki has the power to slowly destroy anything and anyone he puts five fingers on so that's a cool hand to have around his neck.
- Shigaraki mentions a UA invasion, and Mori facing someone named Stain in Hosu. That's the hero killer's name?
- The hero killer is not officially affiliated with the league of villains.
- Something called 'noumus' were released in Hosu but Mori has no idea what this is.
- The hero killer saved Mori? And had ideals based on All Might, who is Mori's hero and mentor.
- Shigaraki's smile is fucking terrifying. The man has some kind of breakthrough that delights him and leads to him strangling Mori a lot, while still threatening him to behave.
- Uraraka comes back and Mori doesn't want to get her involved so tries to convince her that he's fine, but thankfully this is when Shigaraki decides he's done and backs off.
- Mori asks about 'All for One's ultimate goal', who is that? Someone in the league of villains, the boss? Mori in imeeji can only speculate.
- Uraraka calls the police, the mall is closed and Mori goes into the station to give a statement. They assure him he did the right thing.
- All Might arrives and they have a discussion about saving people and people whose hands you can't reach, it's important to stand with a smile to reassure people and light a fire in their hearts! This is the first mention Mori has gotten of the importance of smiling in the face of danger and he will linger on it.
- Mori's mother comes to pick him up in tears and tells him she can't take this, he gets into a lot of trouble like this?? Well apparently his school is constantly under attack so that tracks. He tries to reassure her as a police officer escorts them home.
Memory 5 - Aoyama's attempts at friendship
Notes
- As usual Mori's real name is blurred out. Also missing are lines of dialogue that indicate what his quirk is.
- Mori is in class solving a particularly difficult math problem that is giving the whole class trouble. He is feeling really stressed and wired up about something but he doesn't know what. Mori ALMOST gets the answer but miscalculates because he is in a rush.
- CHEESE?!?!
- One of his classmates, Aoyama-kun, is very enthusiastic about feeding him but refuses to join his friends for lunch when Iida offers. Mori does not understand Aoyama whattttttttttt.
- The memory breezes through the rest of the day, and Mori stays up until 1am studying because he is a nerd that constantly pushes himself. Aoyama then CLIMBS ONTO HIS DORM BALCONY AT 1AM TO WATCH HIM SLEEP AND LEAVE HIM A MESSAGE IN CHEESE. WHY???? Mori finds this behaviour VERY ALARMING and is unable to sleep properly worrying about it. The cheese spelled out 'I know' what does he know??? What secrets does Mori have?!
- Iida and Uraraka are good adorable friends and Mori loves them a lot, look at these nerds. Iida is also the class president and that tracks.
- He spends the day worrying about what the fuck is going on with Aoyama while his classmates prepare for the days training and plan their future hero teams. During training he is asked to beat up Kirishima as one of the classes heavy hitters, a clue about what his abilities are? But he declines to try and work on his own because he is STRESSED and taking things on himself in this memory.
- Kacchan is actually talking to him and taking an interest in his growth, but isn't encouraging. Mori apparently told him he was going to surpass him at one point, and feels frustrated at his lack of growth.
- He knows he can use about 20% of his strength at his limits but what does that mean? What can he do?? He seems to be referring to a power that's not his own, and thinks about someone called Chisaki that he couldn't beat. He's worried about not being able to save people. This may be a hint to why he's so wired up in this memory.
- Aoyama continues to be FUCKING WEIRD.
- The memory is missing the lines "Your quirk doesn't suit your body." and "You couldn't control your quirk at all, right?". This means that Mori has no answer to what 'I know' means, and only gets to hear about Aoyama's background.
- Aoyama was acting so weird because he was worried about Mori and trying to cheer him up with surprises, and encourage him not to take all his worries on alone, which! Is sweet! Mori is touched!! Mori and Aoyama then become friends and Aoyama is constantly trying to feed him.
Memory 6 - Classroom bullying
Notes
- CW FOR BULLYING AND REFERENCES TO SUICIDE
- Any mentions of the name 'Midoriya' are censored, but Bakugou can now be heard calling him 'Deku'.
- He was bullied and mocked as a kid because he is QUIRKLESS. NO QUIRK. A DEVESTATING REVELATION.
- He was absolutely terrified of Bakugou and could barely speak to him, he tried his best to keep his head down and avoid angering him but that doesn't help when his middle school teacher is willing to make him the centre of attention for ridicule and then stand idly by and do nothing while his classmates harass and attack him cool cool cool this is fine.
- Everyone else in the class is laughing at him and finds his dreams of being a hero utterly ridiculous, but Bakugou is actually angry that Mori would even think of trying to be something more than he is.
- He's too terrified of Bakugou to even speak when he's threatened but he's SO MAD, there's even some minor suicide ideation when he curses Bakugou and thinks about how he'd get into trouble if Mori really did kill himself, which is an even more terrifying thing to realise was ever in his headspace SO THAT'S ALSO GREAT. This memory is going to fuck Mori up more than a little.
Memory 7 - Watching All Might's debut over and over
Notes
- The name Izuku is blanked out of course
- Mori is about four years old in this memory and loves this video so much. He makes his mom play it for him all the time and has posters of All Might up and a doll of All Might he carries everywhere, this is Mori's hero!!
- Mori may wonder why he keeps remembering All Might switching between all the muscles and super scrawny, what's up with that??? Probably nothing to worry about though because LOOK! HOW COOL!! ALL MIGHT IS!!!
- He wants to be just like him and be able to rescue people with a smile just like that. MORI'S FOUNDATION IDEALS FOR BEING A HERO UNLOCKED. EXTRA HERO WORSHIP FOR ALL MIGHT!!!
Memory 8 - Kacchan nicknaming him 'Deku'
A memory in which Mori is a very small toddler child, playing with the boys in his neighborhood, including Kacchan who is apparently amazing and clever and can read already!
All the boys are excited and fawning over him, including Mori, up Kacchan reads his name to mean 'Deku', which literally translates to Useless, or a person that can't do anything. Mori does NOT like this alternate reading of his name, and tells them all to stop, but once Kacchan has decided something that's it. So the boys spend the rest of the day playing hero and continue to call Mori Useless.
Notes
- His name is Izuku
- Kacchan used to be his "friend", and has been since they were toddlers, so he has spent literally his entire life being bullied.
- Kids are cruel.
Memory 9 - Getting bullied as a baby
Mori is about four years old in this memory. He's trying to stand up to Kacchan and his friends, who are bullying another boy, but as much as he wants to defend him it is three on one against a boy who can fly, a boy who can create explosions with his hands, and a boy who can stretch out his fingers to hold Mori down and prevent him from fighting back.
He ends up laid out on the ground, beaten and burned too badly to be able to move, while the crying boy continues to weep and knowing that none of this is fair, but it's how life is, and people aren't born equally.
Notes
- THANKS HE HATES IT
Memory 10 - Kacchan standing up to the bigger kids
A memory in which Mori is hiding from Kacchan and his friends, but watching Kacchan closely as two older boys try to harass him, and wins singlehandedly. He's all beat up and crying, but stands firm, and tiny baby Mori is completely awed by it.
Notes
- Kacchan is tough and strong and never gives in he's so cool actually
- 'The strongest heroes always win in the end' KACCHAN = VICTORY.
- A lot of mixed up feelings of his tiny self thinking Kacchan is amazing while also being terrified of him and Mori himself is going to have some issues processing this because he is not a tiny easily impressed baby and one incident isn't enough to solidify Kacchan as the image of victory in his teenage mind just yet, but those feelings are STRONG.
Memory 11 - Saving Kouta from Muscular
Notes
- This is the first big fight Mori remembers and oh boy. The league of villains is attacking his school, who is in a forest for a training camp. And he is apparently very high up on the league's kill list.
The league of villains is after Kacchan for some reason.
- WHEN PEOPLE ARE IN TROUBLE AND CRYING AND SCARED YOU HAVE TO SMILE AND SAVE THEM NO MATTER WHAT
- Muscular is a gross sadist who killed Kouta's parents and has terrible bad morals, and also a pocket full of false eyes for his various moods??
- Sometimes a villain breaks your arms and you just have to keep punching with them anyway.
- He can use 5% of his quirk without hurting himself, and 100% shatters his arms, HE'LL SHOW YOU HOW TO BREAK HIS ARM PROPERLY MUSCULAR!!!
- His teacher back at camp, Aizawa-sensei, has the ability to completely erase quirks.
- When 100% of his strength is just barely holding the villain back it is time to go beyond, PLUST ULTRA!!!
- Mori defeated the villain, but the rest of the league is still out there burning down the forest and attacking his friends so he's gotta run around fighting with his broken arms to save everyone, but hey, that's what he saved his legs for!
Memory 12 - One for All - The people in this world who smile are always the strongest
Notes
- ???
- WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE
- Why is he getting a memory of other people???
- That's good advice tho he should definitely smile to reassure people more. A TRUE HERO SAVES PEOPLE'S SPIRITS.
Memory 13 - Hero names with his mom
Mori is a tiny toddler baby in his All Might onesie, scribbling hero names in his room, which is covered in All Might posters and All Might toys. After a while he runs out to his mom while she's cleaning up to ask for help picking a hero name, which she gladly lists out while he bounces around. It's very cute and she's very encouraging and plays hero with him.
Notes
- This is embarrassing but also cute
- Damn he loves All Might
- HIS MOM IS THE BEST
Memory 14 - One for All - A world like a comic book
This is the flashback itself with the original One for All user and his brother, so Mori is not visible at all and the whole memory is kind of hazy and framed by strange dark flames.
Notes
- Another weird fire memory but the fire is slightly different this time.
- A villain is holding his quirkless, sickly brother captive, and is trying to take over the world like a demon king in a comic book by manipulating people and having them kill people for him. Also he can just hand out super powers???
- Heroes of justice fight through the pain to save everyone no matter how strong the demon king is and will eventually save the day!!!
- ............Maybe. That actually doesn't seem to be working out too well for this guy in the memory.
- ????????????????????
Memory 15 - Cute childhood friends
Unfortunately when Izuku tries to copy him he's no good at it at all and Kacchan makes fun of him, telling him he can't do anything. But it's brushed off as friendly teasing and the two boys continue to play happily together for the rest of the day.
Memory 16 - Your broken arms can still reach
Izuku is in hospital after the training camp was attacked by villains. He's been heavily injured and in and out of agonising, fevered consciousness for two days. His classmates come to visit and he's still kind of out of it, devestated from their loss when Kirishima proposes they go rescue Kacchan. A fight breaks out amongst the students, the few that want to go and the rest that want to leave it to the professionals. Todoroki and Kirishima are the most outspoken for it, while Iida protests furiously.
After they leave, Izuku gets his bandages taken off, told he's going to have permanent long term damage that will require rehabilitation which he has DEFINITELY not been getting in Imeeji, oops, and also if he hurts himself like this 2 or 3 more times he'll lose the use of his arms completely. FUN.
He gets a letter from Kouta, the child he saved, thanking him and also apologising for punching him in the dick when they first met, oh kids. Then he calls his mom and tells her he's being discharged and will be home tomorrow. She tearfully asks him over the phone not to go back to UA.
That night he meets up with Kirishima and Todoroki, who have brought Yaoyoruzu to help track Kacchan. Iida shows up to yell at them some more, making a desperate plea for them not to go that involves punching Izuku in the face and yelling about how he'll end up like Iida's brother, there's a lot of feelings. They resolve to go on a covert vigilante mission without breaking any laws, and Iida insists on going with them so he can pull them back if they get into trouble.
Unsuspicious memory poll
2. Mom's so sorry
Deku is told that he is quirkless and should give up on being a hero. When he goes to his mother crying for reassurance she also breaks down in tears and starts apologising to him over and over. What Deku wanted to hear in that moment was her support, so this broke his heart and really dug in that nobody believed in his dreams and not even his own mother thought it was possible. Part of him knew that it was impossible, but he refused to accept it and clung to a futile hope that everyone treated him as delusional and a joke for.
3. Failing to save Eri
On the first day of his hero internship, Deku is out with his senpai Mirio and they run into the villain their mentor is investigating (Chisaki), and a frightened and clearly abused little girl who's fleeing from him (Eri). Mirio wants to play it off and leave as soon as possible to not arouse suspicion that they're hunting this villain, but Eri is clinging to Deku and begging him not to leave her. Deku holds her tight and confronts Chisaki about why she's covered in so many wounds, he doesn't want to let her go but Mirio keeps pressuring him to let her go and stick to the original mission. Eri ends up going back to Chisaki to protect Deku and Mirio from his fury, and later when they report to their mentor he tells Deku he's being arrogant thinking he can save everybody on the spot and they have to play the long game.
This memory is distressing because the whole reason Deku became a hero was to save people. There's a dichotomy in the series of the motivation to 'save everyone with a smile' and to 'defeat the villain and win no matter what'. Deku is very firmly on the saving everyone end of the spectrum and it's difficult to hear that he can't, that sometimes, you have to leave a little girl to get hurt for the sake of the big picture and stopping the villain from doing so much worse. He can't let it go, can't stop thinking about her, along with several other personal issues with Mirio and Nighteye that he can't remember at this point, but it's all very upsetting and is Eri okay???
Memory 17 - Getting Loose
Izuku is training with All Might's old teacher Gran Torino for his internship. Despite being an old man, Gran Torino is vicious and almost impossible to hit. Izuku goes out and spends the whole night trying to practice maneuvering with his quirk, which involves a lot of smacking into walls and falling into the trash in the alley when he tries to parkour. He makes some progress and knows where he needs to correct, but it's not enough to make him feel accomplished in the morning.
A new microwave is delivered to cook breakfast after Gran Torino smashed the last one in yesterday's training, but Izuku doesn't know how to use it properly. Being shown how it works shows him a new lesson! Instead of concentrating power into one part of his body for a single instant, which delays his reactions, he needs to evenly spread the power throughout his body and maintain it without smashing his body up.
He has another spar with Gran Torino, and while he does still have difficulty controlling his quirk, he manages to lure Gran Torino into a trap and find an opening. Gran Torino manages to dodge, but is impressed by the fact that he was forced to dodge, praising Izuku's analytical skills and judgement in battle. Izuku even managed to graze him! Despite the praise, Izuku doesn't feel like it's enough and wants to keep working. They have breakfast, and then continue their training.
Memory 18 - Vs. Shinsou
It's the third round of the sports festival and Izuku is facing Hitoshi Shinsou, whose teammates from the second round forfeited due to not knowing what happened in that battle. One of them, Ojiro, stops Izuku to warn him about Shinsou's brainwashing quirk and how he can take control of anyone who responds to him. Unfortunately the first thing Shinsou does in the battle is insult Ojiro and Izuku is FURIOUS and snaps back at the insult towards his friend. Shinsou takes control and orders him to walk out of the ring.
But not to worry because SEVERAL GHOSTS TO THE RESCUE. Izuku has a vision of the spirits of the previous One for All holders that help wake him up, and he breaks two fingers to snap himself out of the mind control before going on to flip Shinsou out of the ring. It's a distressing battle as Shinsou spouts vitriol at Izuku over being blessed for his quirk and how his has always held him back, which Izuku has a lot of complicated feelings over with his previous status as quirkless. They end on seemingly good terms though, with Shinsou determined to be a great hero and encouraging Izuku not to lose the next fight, and also catching him with his brainwashing twice more.
In the school nurse's office after the match, Izuku is getting his fingers healed and All Might tells him that while it was the spirits of One for All he saw, it was Izuku's own will that let him see them and he broke out of the brainwashing himself. Izuku isn't really convinced and has a lot of questions but has to move on for his next match.
Memory 19 - UA crush
Class 1A are taking their provisional licence exam with a bunch of other schools, the students of which all seem to know them and even ask for autographs. Their fame turns out to be a bit of a problem when the exam actually starts and all the other students target them! There are 1, 540 examinees and only 100 can pass in the superhero dodgeball game!
Todoroki and Bakugou run off their own immediately; a couple of friends go after Bakugou, but all the rest of 1A sticks together and manages to defend against their attackers really well. At least until one quirk causes a massive earthquake that splits them all up. Izuku is getting pretty excited about all the strong opponents when he's blindsided by a girl who strikes one of his targets. At first he thinks she has some kind of vanishing quirk, but she turns out to be just that good at erasing her presence. Then she gets real into Izuku and wants to know all about him and frankly it's kinda creepy, so he shoves her off of him and then they get ambushed by another group of kids.
Uraraka shows up to help him, but he very quickly figures out it's not Uraraka because the Uraraka he knows is way more competent than this! But he still does his best to save her when she falls because he doesn't want her to get hurt, and has a brief internal monologue about having to be fast enough to reach those in trouble in time (coughKacchancough) and how he needs to keep himself safe in order to save others. After Izuku gets the fake Uraraka to safety, he confronts her about being a fake and then she melts Uraraka's face off and it's the same girl from before, but naked and even more creepily obsessed with learning more about Izuku. Luckily the real Uraraka and Sero show up and scare her off.
So then the three of them team up to take out the nearby group of examinees that were attacking him before and they pass the exam, yay!
Memory 20 - Failing to save Eri - CW CHILD ABUSE
As part of his work study, Deku is working with the Nighteye Agency to investigate a yakuza group called the Shie Hassaiki, working under a man named Chisaki. Deku is surprised the yakuza is an actual threat in this day and age, but apparently this group is teaming up with the League of Villains to do something Bad, but Nighteye can't do anything until they get evidence.
While Deku is out patrolling with his senpai Mirio, a tiny abused girl named Eri runs right into Deku while trying to escape from none other than Chisaki himself! Mirio tries to get them out of there without revealing they're investigating him, but Eri is clinging to Deku so desperately that he can't leave her there. He keeps pressing the issue with Chisaki despite Mirio trying to brush it all off, refusing to give Eri back, until Chisaki shows is bloodlust and Eri races back to his side to prevent Deku and Mirio from getting attacked.
Deku tries to follow but is held back by Mirio and told that if they keep pushing it, they won't be able to catch Overhaul. They have to follow Sir Nighteye's orders and let Eri go with her abuser in order to stop him for good. When they meet up with Nighteye to report it, and Deku says he wishes he could have saved her, Nighteye calls him arrogant and they have to carefully plan and calculate their moves before they can save anyone, and Deku can't just play hero because he feels like it. FEELS BAD. DEKU IS VERY DISTRESSED. CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT ERI AND HER INJURIES.
